Charter invites you to add bite to APD's K-9 Unit

Albuquerque, N.M. (03/25/05) As a part of our charitable focus, Charter plans to donate a fully-trained Belgian Malinois with a flak jacket to the Albuquerque Police Department's K-9 Unit.

Help us provide this unique gift to our community. Your purchase of a Kitchen Connection Cookbook for $5 will go toward acquiring a dog and buying the flak jacket to protect him. Simply stop by any Charter Bank location to purchase a cookbook.

Or, if you prefer, you may make a cash donation to the K-9 Fund by stopping by any Charter Bank branch. Checks can also be mailed to: Charter Bank, Attention: K-9 Fund, PO Box 11519, Albuquerque, NM 87192. Either way, your contribution to this worthwhile endeavor will go a long way.

Behind the Scenes
On an average day, Rozko can be found tracking suspects, helping to obtain evidence, and protecting his handler. His presence also assists in preventing suicidal individuals from harming themselves or others and aids police officers with crowd control. Along with his teammates Maximus, Zorko, Kazan, Hunter, and Rex, Rozko uses his keen sense of sight, smell, and hearing to aid his human partner in the fight against crime.

Rozko is a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois (pronounced MAL-in-wah) and is a member of Albuquerque Police Department's (APD) K-9 Unit. A Belgian Malinois is a medium-size dog of exceptional beauty and working ability used for many purposes, including police work.

Is that a Dutch accent?
Rozko was born in Holland, so all the commands he receives are in Dutch. After training together in California for six weeks, Rozko now lives with his handler, Officer Drew Bader. Together they work with all the departments of APD, including SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics), providing a tangible service that has real and psychological effects on criminal activity within our community.
